Homer and Halibut

August 8, 2012

A cappuccino at the Starbucks at Fred Meyer and we are on our way (again)!  This time our destination is Homer, located on the southwestern Kenai Peninsula on the north shore of the Kachemak Bay, about 94 miles from Soldotna.

We take a short side trip to Clam Gulch State Recreation Area where a long stairway takes us down to the beach.  It is quite beautiful here and the Milepost Book tells us there are plenty of razor back clams for digging, but we are unprepared and instead collect some unusual patterned rocks.  From the shore we are able to view the Redoubt Volcano peeking out through the clouds.

Upon arriving in Homer, we stop at the Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center for some maps and a list of activities.  There is also a film on wildlife (mostly birds) in the Aleutian Islands.

Jutting out for 4.3 miles from the Homer shore is the Homer Spit, a long narrow bar of gravel.  It is the sight of a major dock facility with a number of RV facilities to choose from and Dick’s choice is to stay here for the night.  The Homer Spit Campground suits our needs, so after registering, we take a scenic drive to view the glaciers and the surrounding area.   We check on float planes since Homer is often referred to as the “Bear Viewing Capital of Alaska and we book an excursion for tomorrow at 4 PM.

Before retiring, Dick wants to walk over to the dock and check out the fishing.  This town is famous for its halibut and we are not disappointed.  In front of one of the restaurants, looped together like a string of pearls are the BIGGEST halibut I’ve ever seen.  One weighing 215 lbs.; another 124, and the others at least 50 lbs. each!

Dick hangs out a while longer and I visit the many quaint shops & restaurants that line the street.  The lady that owns the RV Park where we are staying recommended a wonderful restaurant and our meals are scrumptious.

Dick & I visited Homer in 1991, but I enjoy this picturesque town even more this time the around.
